Founded in 1986, its repertory while covering all styles and
epochs, has given special attention to Brazilian music.
In May of 87, the BRASILIA STRING QUARTET, participating in the France-Brazil
project, performed in Paris, Toulouse and Montpelier. On the same occasion, concerts were
given in Gutersloch and Heidelberg, in Germany.
In October of the same year, it was commissioned by UNESCO, to give the premier
performance in Brazil of Henri Dutilleuxs string quartet entitled "Ainsi la
Nuit."
1989 saw them taking part in the "Partners of America" programme
performing in Baltimore and Washington DC. In 1992, they opened the "Music Mountain
Festival" while on tour in the States.
In 1993, their first CD was released and went on to win the "Seventh Sharp
Award" for music, in the category of classical music - prize for best recording wich
included the following works: Quartet No.17 by Villa-Lobos, Quartet Op. 106 by Dvorak and
"Introduction et Allegro" by Maurice Ravel.
In May 1994, they undertook a concert tour in the Argentine, Uruguay and Paraguay,
sponsored by the Brazilian Ministry For Foreign Affairs and, in September of this same
year, their second CD appeared, totally dedicated to the classics of Brazilian Popular
Music.
In 1995, the Quartet performed in the Cultural Centre of the Bank of Brazil, in Rio
de Janeiro; in the Salón Dorado of the Colón Theatre in Buenos Aires; in the city of
Córdoba, Argentina; and, back on home soil, they took part in the XV Winter Festival of
Londrina, as Resident Quartet.
In October and November of this same year, they travelled to Asia for the first
time and initiated a whirlwind tour lasting three weeks and involving eight performances
covering Japan, China and Malaysia. 95 was also to bring them the "OK Cultural
Foundation Award" for outstanding group achievement within the city of
Brasílias cultural milieu.
In January 96, they opened Brasilias Summer International Course and,
in May of that year, their third CD was released - commemorative of the ten years
existence of the Quartet -, performing works by Villa-Lobos, Guerra-Peixe and Carlos
Gomes. They were also to perform in the Cultural Centre of the Bank of Brazil and in the
Sala Cecília Meireles, in Rio de Janeiro; in the Municiple Theatre; in SESI and SESC
Ipiranga, São Paulo; as well as in the city of Quito, Ecuador.
In 97, they opened the inauguration of a series of activities in the Rio
Negro Palace in Manaus, performed at the Arts Palace in Belo Horizonte and the Goiânia
Theatre, as part of the activities for the National Meeting of Composers. 97 also
saw them participating in the 11th Chamber Music Festival of Paraíba, wich took place in
João Pessoa. For 1998, the Brasília String Quartet has as its number one priority, the
release of its fourth CD, devoted to classical works of the international repertory.
Born in Prague, Czech Republic.
1970 - Graduated from the Superior Violin Course at the Prague Conservatory.
Toured Czechoslovakia and Poland with the group Ars Cameralis, as well as in East
Germany with the Philharmonic Youth Orchestra, as the soloist.
1971: moved to Brazil to become a member of the São Paulo Philharmonic Orchestra.
1973 - 1974: member of the Porto Alegre Symphonic Orchestra.
1980 - 1987: member of the National Brasilia Theater Symphonic Orchestra.
Soloed in concerts conducted by Conductors Simon Blech, H. Morelenbaum, Claudio
Santoro, Elena Herrera, Emílio de Cesar, Silvio Barbato, Benito Juarez, Johanes Hömberg
and Gerard Kegelman.
1985: joined the group Pro Musica Köln, fromGermany, with which went in to
extensive tours in South America.
1986: joined the Ouro Preto Mozart Festival Orchestra.
1987: passed the tests for the spalla of the Brasilia National Theater Symphonic
Orchestra.
1975 - 1992: violin teacher at the Brasilia School of Music.
Currently: violin and chamber music professor at the University of Brasilia.
Is a founding member of the Quarteto de Brasilia (Brasilia String Quartet), which
was awarded the Sharp Music Prize, as well as the OK Culture Foundation Prize.
Participated in several tours in Latin America, Europe and Asia. In 1997 was again
nominated for the Luiz Estevão Culture Foundation Prize as the violinist of the Brasilia
Trio, of which is also a founding member.
Born in Brasilia.
Initiated studies in music at the age of five, beginning studies in violin at the age of
eight.
Studied at the Brasilia School of Music under the orientation of Marena Salles and, later,
Cecília Guida.
Participated in the Brasilia International Summer Courses.

Participates intensely in the musical life of the country as a member of orchestras,
chamber music violinist, or soloist.
1992: participated in the opening concert of the CIVEBRA (Brasilia International Summer
Course).
1992 - 1994: violin teacher in the Brazilian Colonial Music International Course in Juiz
de Fora.
1993: soloist with the Claudio Santoro National Theater Symphonic Orchestra and Goias
Philharmonic Orchestra.
Member of the Quarteto de Brasilia (Brasilia String Quartet), accompanying tours in Brazil
and overseas and also participating in music festivals, such as: Itú Arts Festival, São
João del Rei Cultural Winter, Brazilian Colonial Music International Course in Juiz de
Fora and Music Mountain Festival (USA) among others.
Member of the Quarteto de Brasilia (Brasilia String Quartet) who was awarded the SHARP
Prize - best CD - in the category of classical music for the year of 1993 and the Luiz
Estevão Culture Prize in 1995.
Gratuated, in 1964, at the National School of Music of the University of Brazil (now the UFRJ), claiming the Gold Medal award on the occasion. From 1964 to 1968, he spent a further period of perfectionist training at the Parisian National Conservatory for Higher Musical Studies. From 1972 to 1998, he taught at the University of Brasília, where he initiated and firmly established the violoncello course, being directly responsible for the formation of a long line of promising violoncellists. Then came his phase of solo and chamber music dedication, performing in 31 countries covering the three Americas, Europe and Asia, and giving due prominence to the spread of Brazilian music. He has had direct participation in 13 LPs and 10 CDs, and has recorded for diverse labels such as: Chantecler, Festa, Philips, CBS, Basf, RBM, GLB and Comep. Honorary citizen of the State of Nebraska, USA, he is also founding member of the Brasília Quartet. Guerra Vicente plays on a Carlo Tononi instrument, made in Venice in 1727.

ELZA KAZUKO GUSHIKEMElza is a native of Oswaldo Cruz, São Paulo State. Her piano studies were directed by Menininha Lobo, in São Paulo and Jan Eikier in the National School of Higher Musical Studies in Warsaw, Poland. Na award winner in various piano competitions, in 1967 she made her début as soloist with the São Paulo Philarmonic under Maestro Simon Blech. From 1973 to 1997 she taught piano and chamber music at the University of Brasília. Ludmila and Elza launched their first CD Românticos da Boêmia - GLBCD03 - in 1999.
LUIZ DE MOURA CASTROTeaches piano at Hartford University, USA, and is Head of the Piano Department of the Juan Pedro Music School in Barcelona, Spain. He gratuated from the National School of Music - Federal University of Rio de Janeiro, his city of birth, and later on from the Budapest Liszt Academy, Hungary. He played with the Lausanne Chamber Orchestra, the Radio Orchestra of Lisbon, the Philharmonic of Turin, the Bratislava Orchestra, the Janácek Orchestra, the Yaroslav Symphonic, the Dallas, Fort Worth, Hartford and Syracuse Symphonics, as well as with the major orchestras in Brazil. He gave recitals at the Piccolo Scala in Milan; Teatro Ghione, Rome; Salle Gaveau, Paris; Palau de la Música, Barcelona; Rubinstein Hall, in the St. Petersburg Academy; the Metropolitan Museum, New York, amongst others. His discography includes more than twenty CDs for Ensayo (Spain), Euterpe (Switzerland), L'Art (Brazil), GLB (Brazil) and Musical Heritage (USA). In 1998 he started lecturing as visiting professor at the Catholic University of Washington, D.C.. In 1999, he recorded the Rachmaninoff concertos with the Slovenia Orchestra. To all these activities, one can add his work as visiting professor to the Pro Arte musical seminars in Rio de Janeiro.
