A Taste of Brazil (Gosto de Brasil)
The "baião" is a typically Brazilian genre, originally from the northeastern region, characterized by a vibrant rhythm and a melancholic melody. Originally, the singer sings to the accompaniment of an accordion (concertina), a zabumba (big bass drum), and a triangle. The piece has a strong modal character, the use of the dorian being evident as the basic scale, and it presents two quite contrasting sections. The first part explores the baião´s rich rhythm, with its articulated and syncopated melody. In the main part, the theme is reharmonized and developed in a more expressive and melancholic way. The beginning rhythm is then resumed and a canon section leads to the climax.
